How to water your plants if you go on vacation

Nobody asks their neighbors to water their plants anymore, and it’s very likely that your family isn’t keen on watering your plants, but don’t worry. Below, we list a series of ideas, some more technical and others more homemade, to keep your plants healthy during the holidays.

Drip irrigation system

Drip Irrigation System
One option for terraces and balconies is to use a drip irrigation system. This system comprises a timer that controls the irrigation frequency, a pressure regulator, a distribution hose, branch connectors, and their respective drip heads. It is very easy to install and is sold in kits.

Clay cone irrigationClay cone irrigation
This homemade trick is very useful as long as we don’t go on vacation for more than a week. Clay cones allow for extending the duration of the water. To prepare this self-watering system, we just need a plastic water bottle and a small clay cone that is sold with an adapter for the bottle. We explain it here.

Irrigation with gelled waterIrrigation with gelled water
Accompanied by a hydro-control substrate, irrigation with gelled water will help us keep the plants in good condition for a few days. The gel is placed inside a tube, which serves as a water reservoir and will gradually hydrate the substrate.

Self-watering pots or hydro-controlSelf-watering pots or hydro-control
These are pots that include a water reservoir that we can fill before leaving. Depending on the amount we put in, the size of the hydro planter, and the ambient temperature, this system can supply water to the plant for a week up to a month.

Setting up a drip irrigation system is a very practical solution if we’re going on vacation. This time, we’ll give you a straightforward solution: a practical drip irrigation system that works by itself and requires no batteries or electricity.

Homemade Tricks
  • Place the pots in the bathtub. Although it’s increasingly difficult to find a bathtub, if you’re lucky enough to have one, plug the drain with a stopper, cover it with plastic, and place some bricks to set the pots on top. Fill the bathtub with water up to about 5cm. Capillarity will ensure your plants stay safe.
  • Absorbent cotton or chamois strips. Insert one end into the soil of the pot and submerge the other end into a container with plenty of water. The plants will gradually absorb the water.
  • And let’s not forget the classic upside-down water bottle with a hole to drip. Simple and affordable.
